ABOUT LOG CABIN BLOG
Vacation time is becoming increasingly precious in the demanding world of the 21st century. The demand for quality vacation retreats is prompting people to investigate the purchase of their own mountain cabin to use at their leisure and provide rental income when they are not using it. When done right, such a purchase can significantly improve your quality of life while providing attractive financial rewards.
My intent with this Blog is to share with you all the necessary factors for a successful Second Home/Vacation Rental experience. I live and work in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. With the most visited Nation Park in the country at our doorstep, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are year round vacation destinations and cabin nightly rentals are one of the major industries. While the information in this blog is specific to the Great Smoky Mountains, much of it will be germane to any major vacation destination.
Not only will you get the benefits of my experience, observations and opinions; I will be including interviews with management company managers, house keepers, reservationists, maintenance people, owners and guests (if possible). With these varied perspectives you will have a more complete picture of what it takes to own a successful rental cabin.
I hope to update my posts about 3 times a week. Questions and comments are welcome. As far as comments go, unless you say something really ugly, foul or inappropriate, I’ll allow your comments to post unedited.
ABOUT ME
I was born in Chicago and grew up there and in the near by suburbs. I moved to Tennessee in 1967 where I graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1971 with a BS in Marketing.
I then became the Marketing and Sales Manager for Cobbly Nob, a land development with a golf course in Gatlinburg. The following year I went to work for Georgia-Pacific Corp. selling building materials. In 1974, I joined my future wife in operating The Leathersmiths, Inc., the first leather shops in Gatlinburg founded by her in 1972.
In 1980 we moved to Bolinas, California where I was a business consultatant in the San Francisco area until 1984 when we moved to Ojai, California. There I was the manager of The Federated Group, a 300,000 sq. ft. audio- video superstore in near by Ventura.
Upon returning to East Tennessee in 1989, I became Director of Marketing for Creations by Carole, a large retailer in Gatlinburg and a wholesale supplier of candles and animal figurines to the Wick and Sticks candle store chain as well as numerous other retailers.
In 1991, I took a shot at Timeshare sales where I could have made a lot of money if I could have learned to look people in the eyes and lie to them. I did figure out during that experience that the attractive lies I was expected to tell were actually true with regard to cabin ownership, so I obtained my real estate license and began my current career.
It takes some time to establish oneself in the real estate business and in order to support my family during this time I cleaned cabins between appointments. Talk about an education… I learned, first hand, how guests responded to different situations and the formula for the most successful cabin rental. Since then, I have honed my analytical skills and in combination with my practical experience have developed my system of accurately predicting a cabin’s economic potential.
I’m now the broker of my own agency: Will Quinn.com. It’s a one man show which allows me to work from my home and greatly simplify my life.
So, I’m a Chicago kid who is a has become a country boy, living in the mountains and loving it. I truly believe in what I do and would like to help you secure your financial future and share with you the Smoky Mountain experience that I’ve come to love.
